Meet Samuel, Press Officer at Money Saving Expert (MSE).

8 November 2023

Tell us a bit about your background and how you got into your current role?

My career properly began when I turned 18 and finished my A-Levels in Business Studies and Economics. Throughout my time in education, it was clear that university wasn’t for me – at that point, I’d been working three years alongside school and had always preferred it over studying.

That is when I decided an apprenticeship was the most suitable next step and ended up doing a PR and Communications Apprenticeship at the Home Office. I was there for nearly two years, and it is one of the best decisions I have made to date!

Whilst there, I was able to study for a qualification in PR and Communications and gain invaluable skills working on press queries and international campaigns which allowed me to progress into my role at MoneySavingExpert.

What originally attracted you to working as a Press Officer?

The role was advertised on LinkedIn and I was initially attracted to the MSE brand as it looked like a brilliant place to work. I had some prior knowledge of the company – I was already a user of Credit Club and regularly watched Martin Lewis’s show. Having previously worked in a Press Office, I knew this role was something that would align with the skills I had previously built at the Home Office, while allowing me to build on my passion for communications and personal finance. So I decided to apply and here I am!

What tips would you give to someone to advance their skills and in turn, their careers?

I would highly recommend an apprenticeship to anyone who is looking to move into a different industry or build on their career experience! Apprenticeships are starting to be recognised for what they are worth, as studying is not the only route into a role these days. And sorry to myth bust - you don’t just go on coffee runs all day!

Work-life balance - how do we get it right?

Being relatively young while having a professional job has meant that it’s taken some adjusting to get my work-life balance right. For me, ensuring that I take lunch and screen breaks, finishing my working day promptly and making the most of weekends and annual leave mean that I stay focussed on my career, but also create and enjoy a life outside of work!

What’s your favourite holiday destination and why?

Right now, it would have to be Greece! I spent my summer there before joining MSE and it is a beautiful country with some amazing food, friendly locals and beautiful scenery. It’s the best place to get some R&R.
